This was my first issue of wolverine, and from then on, i was in love.  I think it was the cover that made it for me.  And it also made wolverine way sweeter, it was the first i had ever heard that he had lived/spent a bunch of time in japan/was a samurai.  There was one other issue of gambit i got at the same time, that had Maverick and wolverine and their pasts together, and it is just proof of how versatile a character wolverine is.  He can be in any backstory ever (just look at spiderman’s parents).
